A Meal

Great egret eating a fish
This great egret had just caught this fish. The bird’s beak is about 6″ or 15 cm long. That’s a pretty big meal. It had no problem getting it down its long throat. I took this at Inverness on Tomales Bay.

A Small Snack

This great egret was hunting food on the edge of Tomales Bay in Inverness, Marin County, CA., when it caught what looks like a tadpole.

Bird Behavior: Wanting More Food

Great Egret hatchling holding its parents head in its beak demanding more food.
As the hatchlings get older, they get more aggressive. This one is demanding more food by firmly holding its parent’s head in its beak. The photo was taken at the W. 9th St. rookery, Santa Rosa, CA

Protection

This is a similar photo published earlier. This one has the mother’s head turned to give her a greater connection to her hatchlings. This photo was taken at the W. 9th Street rookery, Santa Rosa, California.

“I Want More Food!”

baby bird grabbing beak of its parent.
One of the hatchlings has grabbed its parent’s beak and seems to be demanding more food. The other parent is ready to fly away to leave the demanding baby to her mate. Photographed at the W. 9th Street rookery, Santa Rosa, California.

Testing Those Legs

Mama’s not looking as her hatchling is peering over the edge of the nest. It appears these babies are about two weeks old. Photo was taken at the W. 9th Street rookery in Santa Rosa, California.

Feeding Time
