Bigfin Reef Squid
These large squid seem to dance across the surface of reefs and the sandy bottom. They use jets of water to propel themselves. Monterey, CA June 19, 2018

Thank you Tina. These are beautiful. Like the jelly fish you stand there and are mesmerized by them.

Rawls thank you. Fortunately the lighting was good. Even so the ISO was set to 2000.

This must be one of the best wildlife photos I’ve ever seen – you really have to enter it into one of the prestigious photographic competitions, Tim!

Dries, thank you. I’m honored that this photo receives such high praise from you. I’ll look around for suitable competitions. I generally don’t enter them because they charge a fee to the very people to whom they should be supporting – photographers/artists. I will enter it into the Santa Rosa Photographic Society’s competition where I’m a member. Nature will be one of the categories for next month. Not to burden you but if you have some suggestions of suitable competitions, I’d welcome hearing about them. Again, thank you.
I enjoy see what you and your family are up to in de Wets Wild.

I’ve enjoyed your wonderful photos for as long as I’ve been part of the blogging world, Tim, but this image has really blown me away!
The most prestigious competitions I know of are those of National Geographic (http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/nature-photographer-of-the-year-2017/) and the UK’s Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/wpy/competition.html)
Three others to consider:
> Association for the Wildlife and Nature Photo Festival: https://www.photo-montier.org/en/les-concours-du-festival/reglements-modalites/
> Nature Photographer of the Year: https://www.naturephotographeroftheyear.com/
and
> Acclaimed Wildlife Photographer Will Burrard-Lucas’ competition: http://www.wildlifephoto.com/wildlife-photography-competition/

Dries, thank you so much for taking the time to compile this list of nature related competitions. I know some are already closed for 2018 but I’ll bookmark them for future consideration. Looking at the winning images is inspiring and are examples to guide and encourage all photographers.
Again, thank you for your support and encouragement.

Dries, you’re welcome. I’m constantly looking for improvements. There is so much to learn and it limits my going out to shoot. There is a happy balance there somewhere. Thanks again.
